Greetings Canarsie Cub Families,
Please see our Weekly Scoop for the week of 04/15-04/21 of the 2020-2021 School Year!
I have attached documents, and provided lots of family resources down below. We have quite a lot of information to provide this week, so be sure to read through this issue of the newsletter closely!
Important Reminders and Notifications
Mandatory Progress Report Conferences will be held on Thursday, April 29th and Friday, April 30th. Families, be sure to schedule your conference time with your student’s teachers. Asynchronous learning will occur on both days.
3rd & 4th grade families: STATE EXAM ANNOUNCEMENT – All 3rd and 4th grade scholars will take the ELA and Math state exams online on Tuesday, May 4th and Wednesday, May 19th respectively. Please ensure your scholars log on to their google classroom and ring central link at 8:00 AM for specific instructions on those two days. You may see the attached letter in English, Spanish and Creole regarding state exams from our Chief Schools Officer.
4th grade announcement: CALS 4th graders are automatically enrolled into Canarsie Ascend Middle School’s 5th grade next year – there is no need to do anything! To learn more about CAMS specifically, join an informational open house on Wednesday, April 21st from 5PM-6PM by logging on to this ring central link.
KG and 4th Grade Graduation ceremonies: Ascend is currently considering how we can implement graduation ceremonies this year in keeping with CDC guidance. We expect to communicate a final decision in May about whether it will be virtual or outdoors!
Teacher Appreciation Week will be from May 3rd - May 7th. Do you have any great ideas about how you’d like to show your family’s appreciation for teachers? E-mail us at email@example.com to let us know!
Letter to Families regarding early school year start for SY21-22 school term: School will start earlier in the year for our students, beginning on August 16. This change will add 11 days of learning for CALS students. We are making a change to the academic calendar because students have lost many hours of school this past year. Also, adding instructional time to next year’s calendar will benefit all Ascend students and allow us to begin mitigating post-pandemic impacts sooner. We believe every extra hour of learning matters in preparing our students for success in college and beyond. Please read the letter from our CSO Brandon Sorlie and CEO Lisa Margosian, available in English, Spanish, and creole.
Virtual Picture Day Option: Due to the current remote setting, our scheduled March picture days were cancelled, but families can use the Snaps@Home feature on the Shutterfly app if interested in ordering pictures for scholars. Families can order directly through the Shutterfly app. More info can be found HERE
CALS Building Access Changes: Families will only be allowed to access the building by appointment. You can make an appointment by contacting the CALS Ops Team via email or phone. Additionally, anyone entering the building will be expected to fill out the daily health questionnaire and temperature screening.
Technology Access Reminders: Families, please make sure that your scholars are taking proper care of their school technology. We need to ensure they are appropriately used and protected. Families may incur a fee to fix/replace parts of the laptop if they are damaged.
