The Weekly Scoop -- Summer Edition #1

Dear Canarsie Cub Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you and your families safe and well. Since we are officially on summer break, we will be sending out further newsletters as needed rather than weekly.

Congratulations to your scholars and the entire family for finishing a tremendously challenging school year! If you missed the Kindergarten Step Up Ceremony, you may catch it here.

Please note that returning families to Canarsie Ascend Lower School (current K-3) and incoming families to Canarsie Ascend Middle School (current grade 4) will NOT be required to return student laptops or hotspots at this time. However, families who will not need a laptop this summer, whose laptop is not working, or who will not return to CALS or CAMS, may drop off equipment at our school on Monday, 6/15 (TODAY!), from 10AM to 2PM. Interested families should sign up for drop off here.

At this time, families are not permitted enter the school building to retrieve scholar items. When the PAUSE order is lifted – hopefully later this summer – we will organize a time for families to retrieve scholar belongings, if you wish. When that time comes, we will also distribute Spring Picture Day packages. We appreciate your patience.

Additionally, we have attached a letter from Ms. Michals with information regarding Ascend’s plans for the summer and next school year. Please review for details regarding the cancellation of summer school and details regarding summer packets. We expect to communicate more information regarding summer packets by Monday, 6/22.

Please note that all K-4 scholars will continue to have access to through the summer. We hope this will help your scholar to stay engaged in learning over the break!

Ascend, along with other charter networks, is hosting a phone bank with NYC Census 2020 on Friday, 6/19, and we are inviting our families, students, and staff to join us and encourage our Brooklyn neighbors to fill out the Census. What's at stake? Billions of dollars in federal funds for public education, housing, roads, bridges, and more. Let's make our voices heard. RSVP here.

As you may already be aware, schools across New York State are facing the possibility of a 20% budget cut. Please join us in using our voices to ensure that schools have the funding we need to operate our schools at a high level.

We are excited to host the Scholastic Summer Read-A-Palooza Virtual Book Fair from 6/15 to 9/4! Families may browse our online catalog and purchase books to be delivered directly to your home. Book-only orders over $25 qualify for free shipping, and all purchases will benefit our school.

We have some additional resources to share with you this week:

Lastly, Ascend Public Charter Schools still have seats for grades K-12! Please tell a relative, friend, or neighbor to join Ascend! Interested families can call or text 347-227-6070 in English, Spanish, or Haitian Creole from 9AM to 8PM on Mondays-Fridays to learn more. If you are interested in participating in virtual open houses and Q&A panels to help with outreach, please sign up to be an Ascend parent ambassador here!

Please see below for some important reminders:

There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York now ranks #38 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete it today—with or without your Census ID:

To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here:

Households that qualify will receive deliveries within 3 days of the order date, and each order will contain three days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply:

Please be assured that we will continue to send you updates via email and our school website. If you have any questions, please reach out to and be sure to include your scholar’s name.
