The Weekly Scoop for 6/1--6/5

Dear Canarsie Cub Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you and your families safe and well. The past few months have been difficult, and the past few days have been even more troubling. Please note that all Ascend schools will observe a mental health day on Tuesday, 6/2, so that we can rest, rejuvenate, reflect, and connect with loved ones. We will resume instruction on Wednesday, 6/3.

In addition, we are holding a virtual Family Forum & Vigil for our families on Thursday, 6/4. We have experienced loss and continued injustices, and we are navigating heavy emotions at this time. We want to create space for our community to rally, connect, and express ourselves in solidarity. The open forum will begin at 5PM, followed by the candlelit vigil at 6PM.

As we enter week 10 of remote learning on Google Classroom, please be reminded that our school will remain closed through the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, which will end on Friday, 6/12. At this time, we do not have any confirmed information regarding the 2020-21 school year. We will share it with you as soon as it becomes available.

To wrap up the school year, we are holding virtual step up ceremonies for our scholars in kindergarten and grade 4 on Friday, 6/12! The grade 4 ceremony will begin at 11AM and the kindergarten ceremony will begin at 2PM. Scholars should dress formally, and classroom parties will follow the ceremony.

If you have not already, we encourage families to check out the Fountas & Pinnell parent guides on our Family Resources page. As you receive updates from your scholar's teachers, these guides may help with summer activities and learning. These guides explain characteristics of the reading levels, provide titles that fall within the level, and offer prompts that you can use while reading and discussing a book with your scholar.

Please be reminded that our Spring Picture Day packages are currently being held by Lifetouch until we can safely receive them at school. The company does not have the capacity to ship packages and proofs to individual families at this time. Once we are able to receive them at school, we will create and communicate a plan to distribute them to families.

Lastly, Ascend Public Charter Schools still have seats for grades K-12! Please tell a relative, friend, or neighbor to join Ascend! Interested families can call or text 347-227-6070 in English, Spanish, or Haitian Creole from 9AM to 8PM on Mondays-Fridays to learn more. If you are interested in participating in virtual open houses and Q&A panels to help with outreach, please sign up to be an Ascend parent ambassador here!

As always, if you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York now ranks #38 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete it today—with or without your Census ID:

NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here:

To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here:

NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify will receive deliveries within 3 days of the order date, and each order will contain three days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply:

Did your scholar complete a super fun activity this week? Is your scholar working on a hands-on project? Were they spotted wearing their favorite CALS t-shirt? Let’s keep up the CALS spirit with #CALSAtHome! We are encouraging families to share school-related photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #CALSAtHome.
