Dear Canarsie Cub Families,
We hope this newsletter finds you and your families healthy and well. Today, we will begin week 7 of remote learning on Google Classroom. If you have not already, please review our remote learning 2.0 letter to families for improvements. Also, please note that our school will remain closed through the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, which will end on Friday, 6/12. As we receive information regarding the 2020-21 school year, we will be sure to share it with you.
This week, we are holding Parent Teacher Conferences! Please reach out to your scholar’s teachers to sign up for a conference time, if you have not already. Instead of a traditional progress report, families will receive a learning update from the teacher that indicates Term 2 data from before and during remote learning. Teacher email addresses are available on the Family Resources page on our website.
Thank you to those families who attended our Spring Fling on Friday! We have more virtual school events this week for you to join:
Let your star shine at our TALENT SHOW on Thursday, 5/14. Each grade level will have a designated talent show session.
CULTURE DAY will take place on Friday, 5/15. It will include both scholar presentations about their culture and heritage AND staff-led activities about cultures around the world.
For more details, please check the attached flyers AND your scholar’s Google Classroom stream, incl. for RingCentral or Cisco WebEx links.
In addition, Canarsie Ascend Middle School will be hosting a virtual open house on Wednesday, 5/13, at 12pm for our Grade 4 families ONLY. Please register for this webinar opportunity to learn more about CAMS here. You will receive more information upon registration.
Lastly, we are looking for Ascend parents and student ambassadors! Are you bursting with Ascend pride? Do you wish more families knew about the positive impact CALS is having on the community? If so, please sign up to be Ascend ambassadors here! As an ambassador, you’ll participate in virtual open houses and Q&A panels and more.
As always, if you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

LET’S GET COUNTED ON THE 2020 CENSUS
There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York currently ranks #43 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete it today—with or without your Census ID: https://my2020census.gov/
MEAL HUBS & REGIONAL ENRICHMENT CENTERS (RECs)
NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here: https://www.opt-osfns.org/schoolfoodny/meals/default.aspx
To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here: https://bit.ly/2xfzEVe
NYC FOOD DELIVERY ASSISTANCE
NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify may place an order every 48 hours, and each order will contain two days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply:
SHOW US HOW YOU #CALSAtHome
Did your scholar complete a super fun activity this week? Is your scholar working on a hands-on project? Were they spotted wearing their favorite CALS t-shirt? Let’s keep up the CALS spirit with #CALSAtHome! We are encouraging families to share school-related photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #CALSAtHome. Please review the attached Social Media excerpt of the Family Handbook for guidance on what is appropriate or inappropriate to post.
If you would like to share content with our network Communications Team, please submit content to email@example.com or tag @ascendschools on Instagram.
