The Weekly Scoop for 5/4--5/8

Dear Canarsie Cub Families,

We hope your family enjoyed the well-deserved break. Today, we will begin week 6 of remote learning on Google Classroom. If you have not already, please review our remote learning 2.0 letter to families for improvements.

This week is also Teacher Appreciation Week at CALS! We are inviting all families to participate and show your appreciation. There are many ways to show your appreciation, but here are 3 simple ways to celebrate your favorite teachers:

  • Send your teachers a heartfelt email or video. Tap into your creativity! Please see our Family Resources page for individual email addresses.

  • Give your teachers an e-gift card. Please note that, in compliance w/ our code of ethics, gifts from any source should NOT exceed $75 in value.

  • Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT) is giving away $10 gift cards to 10,000 teachers! All you have to do is share a moment of teacher thanks using the hashtag #ThankATeacherChallenge, tag @TeachersPayTeachers, and submit this nomination form. Offer lasts on a first-come, first-served basis, and entries must be entered by 5/8. For more information, please visit here.

  • Spend quality time with your teachers during office hours. Maybe you’ll coordinate a group activity or a surprise, or maybe you’ll choose to just chat with your teachers to get to know them better!

In addition, we have three upcoming virtual school events for you to join:

  • Our 80’s-inspired SPRING FLING will take place on Friday, 5/8, at 6pm. This is family event, so please feel free to invite the whole household!

  • Let your star shine at our TALENT SHOW on Thursday, 5/14. Each grade level will have a designated talent show session. To perform, you must sign up by Friday, 5/8.

  • CULTURE DAY will take place on Friday, 5/15. It will include both scholar presentations about their culture and heritage AND staff-led activities about cultures around the world.

  • For more details, please check your scholar’s Google Classroom stream, incl. for RingCentral or Cisco WebEx links.

Lastly, we are looking for Ascend parent and student ambassadors! Are you bursting with Ascend pride? Do you wish more families knew about the positive impact CALS is having on the community? If so, please sign up to be Ascend ambassadors! As an ambassador, you’ll participate in virtual open houses and Q&A panels and more.

As always, if you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York currently ranks #43 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete it today—with or without your Census ID:

NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here:

To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here:

NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify may place an order every 48 hours, and each order will contain two days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply:

Did your scholar complete a super fun activity this week? Is your scholar working on a hands-on project? Were they spotted wearing their favorite CALS t-shirt? Let’s keep up the CALS spirit with #CALSAtHome! We are encouraging families to share school-related photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #CALSAtHome. Please review the Social Media excerpt of the Family Handbook for guidance on what is appropriate or inappropriate to post.

If you would like to share content with our network Communications Team, please submit content to or tag @ascendschools on Instagram.

Please be assured that we will continue to send you updates via email and our school website. If you have any questions, please reach out to and be sure to include your scholar’s name and homeroom.
