Dear Canarsie Cub Families,
We hope this email finds your family well. On Monday, we will begin week 5 of remote learning on Google Classroom. Please review this remote learning 2.0 letter to families for improvements we’ll be making.
In addition, Ascend will honor spring break for K-8 students and teachers as scheduled from 4/27 to 5/1. Students will not be required to complete assignments during this time. If you are interested, please feel free to check Google Classroom for suggestions from teachers to maintain engagement, learning, and fun during this time. The grief counseling will remain open across the week with a slightly modified schedule, and the city will continue to provide meals daily at Meal Hubs.
Please note that the Ascend Charter Schools Board of Trustees will meet virtually on Wednesday, 4/22, at 6:30pm. Due to recent public health guidance regarding COVID-19 and in compliance with the governor’s executive on NYS public officers law, meetings will take place virtually until further notice. Participants can join the meeting by using this link. The public comment period will take place at the beginning of the meeting and public comments will be limited to 2 minutes per speaker.
SAVE THE DATE! CALS will host a virtual 80’s-inspired Spring Fling on Friday, 5/8, at 6pm. We will provide more information in the coming weeks.
As you may be aware, Governor Cuomo has announced that schools will stay closed through 5/15. Please review this school closure letter from our interim CEO Lisa Margosian for more details.
If you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team [at firstname.lastname@example.org] for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

LET’S GET COUNTED ON THE 2020 CENSUS
There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York currently ranks #43 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete it today—with or without your Census ID: https://my2020census.gov/
MEAL HUBS & REGIONAL ENRICHMENT CENTERS (RECs)
NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here: https://www.opt-osfns.org/schoolfoodny/meals/default.aspx
To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here: https://bit.ly/2xfzEVe
NYC FOOD DELIVERY ASSISTANCE
NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify may place an order every 48 hours, and each order will contain two days of meals. REMOTE LEARNING DEVICE REQUEST
NYC DOE has expanded its remote learning device program to include charter school families, especially students with IEPs or students living in temporary housing and in foster care . Each iPad is equipped with Internet, and priority will be given to students most in need. All devices are granted on temporary basis and will later need to be returned. There is a limit of one device per student. If you are interested, please submit your request here: https://coronavirus.schools.nyc/remotelearningdevices
