The Weekly Scoop for 4/13--4/17

April 13, 2020

Dear Canarsie Cub Families,

We hope this email finds your family well. Today, we are beginning week 4 of remote learning on Google Classroom. Please note that Term 2 Parent Teacher Conferences, initially scheduled for 4/16 and 4/17, have been postponed until further notice. The network is finalizing details in this plan, and they may be rescheduled to mid-May.

However, Ascend will honor spring break for K-8 students and teachers as scheduled from 4/27 to 5/1. We will provide more information to maintain engagement, learning and fun for scholars during the break.

If you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

Additionally, we would like to encourage our families to check out these newly compiled free or low-cost resources:

LET’S GET COUNTED ON THE 2020 CENSUS

There is still time to complete the 2020 Census! New York currently ranks #43 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines the number of seats each state has in Congress and other levels of government, and it helps direct billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for schools, roads, and other public services. Please review the attached flyer for more information. We encourage all families to take some time (~10 minutes) to complete the census today—with or without your Census ID!

MEAL HUBS & REGIONAL ENRICHMENT CENTERS (RECs)

NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here.

To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs), where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here.

NYC FOOD DELIVERY ASSISTANCE

NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify may place an order every 48 hours, and each order will contain two days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply.

REMOTE LEARNING DEVICE REQUEST

NYC DOE has expanded its remote learning device program to include charter school families, especially students with IEPs or students living in temporary housing and in foster care . Each iPad is equipped with Internet, and priority will be given to students most in need. All devices are granted on temporary basis and will later need to be returned. There is a limit of one device per student. If you are interested, please submit your request here.

SHOW US HOW YOU #CALSAtHome

Did your scholar complete a super fun activity this week? Is your scholar working on a hands-on project? Were they spotted wearing their favorite CALS t-shirt? Let’s keep up the CALS spirit with #CALSAtHome! We are encouraging families to share school-related photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #CALSAtHome. Please review the Social Media excerpt of the Family Handbook for guidance on what is appropriate or inappropriate to post.

If you would like to share content with our network Communications Team, please submit content to socialmedia@ascendlearning.org or tag @ascendschools on Instagram.

Please be assured that we will continue to send you updates. If you have any questions, please reach out to cals_ops@ascendlearning.org and be sure to include your scholar’s name and homeroom.

In partnership,
