The Weekly Scoop for 4/6--4/10

Dear Canarsie Cub Families,

We hope this email finds your family well. Today, we are beginning week 3 of remote learning on Google Classroom. Please note that remote learning will pause on Friday, 4/10, in observance of Good Friday. We will resume instruction on Monday, 4/13.

Help us to improve remote learning! We are gathering feedback from families in order to make improvements. Surveys are available in English and Spanish at this time.

If you have trouble accessing the content or navigating on Google Classroom, please reach out to your scholar’s teachers and the Operations Team for more information and troubleshooting. Please include your scholar’s name and homeroom in your email. We will do our best to support you!

Please see below for more important updates:

Please let us know if your scholar will be returning to CALS next year by completing the Intent to Return form as soon as possible. Forms are available in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.

NYC DOE has expanded its remote learning device program to include charter school families. Each iPad is equipped with Internet, and priority will be given to students most in need. All devices are granted on temporary basis and will later need to be returned. There is a limit of one device per student. If you are interested, please submit your request here.

Did your scholar complete a super fun activity this week? Is your scholar working on a hands-on project? Were they spotted wearing their favorite CALS t-shirt? Let’s keep up the CALS spirit with #CALSAtHome! We are encouraging families to share school-related photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #CALSAtHome. Please review the Social Media excerpt of the Family Handbook for guidance on what is appropriate or inappropriate to post.

If you would like to share content with our network Communications Team, please submit content to or tag @ascendschools on Instagram.

NYC is providing food delivery assistance to New Yorkers who cannot access food themselves and are unable to afford meal delivery or grocery delivery. Households that qualify may place an order every 48 hours, and each order will contain two days of meals. Please visit here for more info and to apply.

NYC DOE is committed to offering three free Grab-and-Go Meals available daily for ALL New Yorkers across 400+ Meal Hubs. Meals will be available Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 11:30am for children and families and 11:30am to 1:30pm for adults. Vegetarian and halal options are available at all sites, and families may pick up meals for their children. No registration, ID, or documentation is required. No one will be turned away at any time. Please find a free meal location here.

To support our first responders, healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel, the DOE continues to open Regional Enrichment Centers, where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Eligible parents can complete the survey here.

We will continue to make our school website a consistent and reliable place for information. Since last week, we’ve updated key information on the Family Resources page. We have also updated the News and Updates page where you can view recent weeks’ Weekly Scoop. Please check them out!
