The Weekly Scoop -- Summer Edition #1
  • Congratulations to all scholars and their families for finishing a tremendously challenging school year! Each scholar's family should receive their Term 2 End-of-Year Learning Update via email from the homeroom teacher. Scholars will have access to IXL through the summer.
  • At this time, families are not permitted to enter the school building to retrieve scholar items. When the NYS PAUSE order is lifted, hopefully later this summer, we will organize a time for families to retrieve scholar belongings. When that time comes, we will also distribute Spring Picture Day packages. We appreciate your patience.
  • UPDATED: Summer homework packets and PDFs of the grade-level reading for our rising grades 1-5 scholars are now available on this Google Drive folder. Please read this letter from Ms. Michals for additional information regarding Ascend's plans for the summer and next school year.
  • Ascend, along with other charter networks, is hosting a phone bank with NYC Census 2020 on Friday, 6/19,  and we are inviting our families and staff to join us and encourage Brooklyn neighbors to fill out the Census. What's at stake? Billions of dollars in federal funds for public education, housing, roads, bridges, and more. RSVP here.
  • Schools across New York State are facing the possibility of a 20% budget cut. Please join us in using our voices to ensure that schools have the funding we need to operate our schools at a high level by taking action.
  • We are excited to host the Scholastic Summer Read-A-Palooza Virtual Book Fair from 6/15 to 9/4! Families may browse our online catalog and purchase books to be delivered directly to your home. Book-only orders over $25 will qualify for free shipping, and all purchases will benefit our school.
  • Ascend Public Charter Schools still have seats for grades K-12! Please tell a relative, friend, or neighbor to join Ascend! Interested families can call or text 347-227-6070 in English, Spanish, or Haitian Creole from 9AM to 8PM on Mondays-Fridays to learn more. If currently enrolled families are interested in participating in virtual open houses and Q&A panels to help with outreach, please sign up to be an Ascend parent ambassador!
  • Have you completed the 2020 Census? New York now ranks #38 out of 50 states in self-response rate. The census determines political representation in Congress and other levels of government and helps direct billions of dollars in federal funding to local communities. Please take some time (~10 minutes) and complete the census today!
  • UPDATED: The Ascend Charter Schools Board of Trustees will meet virtually on Wednesday, 6/24, at 6:30pm. Due to recent public health guidance regarding coronavirus and in compliance with the governor's executive on the NYS public officers law, meetings will take place virtually until further notice. Participants can join the meeting by using this link. The public comment period will take place at the beginning of the meeting and public comments will be limited to two minutes per speaker. If you would like to sign up to make a public comment, please email Sophie Kramer in advance of the meeting.
We will be communicating information regarding summer homework packets by Monday, 6/22.
** IXL.com is a supplemental, web-based resource for teachers and scholars to extend the learning. It is aligned to grade-level standards and adjusts to the student's progress and areas for improvement. Scholars will have access to IXL through the summer.
Each scholar is already set up with an account on IXL.com. If you require assistance with your scholar's log-in credentials, please reach out to the Operations Team.
